’90s
Shelley Unocic (Univ Coll ’98) is the new director of the Cornerstone CFCU Arena in Lockport, N.Y.
Dr. Umair A. Shah (MED ’96) is now the president of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). Shah is the executive director of Harris County Public Health in Texas. As president, Shah will chair the board of directors of the association, which serves as the public face of NACCHO and represents members in matters of policy, public health practice, and collaboration with partners in public and private sectors. NACCHO represents the nation’s nearly 3,000 local government health departments.

Denise Orwick (UTCTC ’94) received her Masters of Education degree with distinction from Tiffin University. Orwick is the Director of Respiratory and Neurology Services at Wyandot Memorial Hospital in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

Melissa Gleckler (A/S ’96, MA ’09) was recognized for achievements in advising by the Ohio Academic Advising Association and presented with the Advising Excellence Award at the association’s June conference. Gleckler is an educational technologist at UT’s University College.

*Thomas Sodeman (MED ’95) is the president of the Air War College Alumni Society of the US Air Force Air War College located on the Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala. Since 1947, the Air War College resident program has graduated more than 7,000 joint and international officers who served in the senior echelon of their respective military service. Sodeman is board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology and transplant hepatology. He practices in the Ruppert Health Center on the Health Science Campus of UT.

Erica Silk (Law ’97) assumed the role of director of development and alumni relations of the Ottawa Hills School System in Ohio. Silk also will serve as the executive director of the Ottawa Hills Schools Foundation. She is responsible for designing and executing a comprehensive fund development strategy.

Holly Lynn Baumgartner (A/S ’92, Honors ’92) was named dean of the Getty College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio Northern University. Baumgartner previously served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio. The Getty College of Arts and Sciences encompasses a wide range of studies in the liberal and fine arts, sciences and pre-professional programs.

Dr. Binesh Patel (MED ’00) was selected as the new chief medical officer for the Genesee County hospital facility located in Flint, Mich. Patel has managed multiple hospital departments including laboratory, pharmacy and cardiology services over the course of his career.

Gary McGinnis (Univ Coll ’13) is a pilot with American Eagle Airline, a commuter affiliate of American Airlines. American Eagle introduced a direct flight from Toledo Express Airport to Charlotte, N.C., and McGinnis was the pilot of the inaugural flight. He bid for this flight even though it was his scheduled day off. McGinnis is a huge Rocket fan and wears a UT lanyard to hold his American Airlines ID badge.
Rachel Aumiller (Bus ’17) joined Great Lakes Marketing as a research assistant and became a project manager upon graduation from UT. Great Lakes Marketing is a full-service marketing research and consulting firm in Toledo.

Matthew Hohler (MPH ’16) is launching Levanta Coffee, a new coffee company that aims to have a dramatic and positive impact on the lives of the company’s partner-farmers. The company’s model goes well beyond fair trade and pays 50 percent more directly to the producers.

Jennyfer Darling (Eng ’14) was selected as a Thirty Under 30 Fellow from more than 300 competitive applicants across the country. The fellows take time away from their jobs as Ford engineers, financial, marketing and IT professionals to learn what it takes to run a charity and develop strategies to help nonprofits connect with younger generations. Darling works in IT as a North American Powertrain Site Process Manager in Allen Park, Mich.
Tasha Sheipline (Ed ’15) was promoted to the position of director of adult education at the Apollo Career Center in Lima, Ohio.
Births and Marriages
Dr. Stephen Clark Johnson (MED ’10) and Rebecca Susan Overall were joined in marriage on July 8 at Tammany View Baptist Church in Lewiston, Idaho. Stephen is a sports and spine medicine physician at Harborview and Husky Stadium in Seattle and a clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington with the sports and spine division in the department of rehabilitation medicine. Rebecca is the athletic director at the French American School of Pudget Sound.
Craig DiRienzo (A/S ’09) and Jenna Latcheran announced their engagement and are planning a ceremony for 2019. Craig is a video producer for MediaFuel in Fishers, Ind., and Jenna is employed at Youngstown State University in disability services.

*Trent Voss (Univ Coll ’15) and Alexis Bryant exchanged vows on July 22 at Maumee Bay State Park in Oregon, Ohio. Trent is a graduate assistant and linebacker coach for The University of Toledo football team, and Alexis is a stay at home mother.

Nicole Hoover (Ed ’11, Honors ’11) and Joe Arnold are engaged to wed on Nov. 4. Nicole is a third-grade teacher with Tiffin City Schools, and Joe is a laborer with Northstar Contracting in Cleveland.
Debbie Ruse (Bus ’08) and Patrick McKee were married on Aug. 26 at St. Anthony Parish in Columbus, Ohio. Debbie is an account manager at McGraw-Hill Education, and Patrick is a firefighter and paramedic with the Columbus Division of Fire.

Kasey Rae Lusch (Univ Coll ’14) and Mitchell Lawrence Guc (current UT student) were joined in marriage on May 27 in a ceremony held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Monroe, Mich. Kasey is a behavioral specialist and works in special education with emotionally impaired students, and Mitchell is a third-year law student at UT and editor-in-chief of the University’s Law Review.

Kim Hoover (Eng ’14) and Drew Coutcher (Eng ’14) announced their engagement and Oct. 7 wedding. Kim is a transportation engineer with the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Drew is a transportation engineer with DGL Consulting Engineers in Maumee, Ohio.

Michelle Jorrey (NRS ’15) and Eric Ondrus exchanged vows on Aug. 25. Michelle is employed by Colorado Injury and Pain Specialist and the Canyonview Surgery Center, Colorado, and Eric is a physical therapist with P.T. Link in Grand Junction, Colo.

Mandi (Day) Sutton (NRS ’09) and Mark Sutton were united in marriage on July 30 in Raleigh, N.C. The couple resides in Gulfport, Miss.

Faculty, staff & friends

Dr. James G. Diller, Ann Arbor, Mich., 88. He was a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery from 2000 to 2003. The plastic and reconstructive surgeon led medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic starting in the 1990s; several Medical College of Ohio physicians and students helped on these trips. In 2007, Diller was inducted into the Global Medical Mission Hall of Fame.

Barbara C. (Baily) Krastin, Toledo, 87. She was secretary to the dean in the College of Education from 1952 to 1972.

Thaddeus P. “Ted” McHugh, Toledo, 83. He joined UT as an adviser in 1980 and later became director of Adult Liberal Studies. In 1995, as acting director of University College Programs, McHugh received the University’s Outstanding Adviser Award.

Robert L. Shryock, Indianapolis, 92. He was the manager of the UT bookstore from 1952 until his retirement in 1987.

Lynn Brown Buri, Maumee, Ohio, 69. She was a social worker in Outcome Management from 2004 to 2011.

Eugene Sund, Toledo, 88. He was a member of the Satellites Auxiliary; for a time, he served as treasurer for the volunteer organization.

Joseph W. Smolinski (Pharm ’69), Toledo, 70. He was a pharmacist who worked at MCO, MUO and UT for four decades. After retiring, he continued to work part-time until 2010.
