’70s

Frank Beane (Law ’72) and his wife, Patricia, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 16 with a dinner at St. George Cultural Center in Massillon, Ohio. Frank practices criminal defense law in Canton, Ohio, and Patricia serves on the Massillon Public Library Board of Trustees.

David J. Sobczak (Bus ’70, MBA ’79) retired after a 47-year career in various fields, including public accounting with KPMG; 10 years in supervisory accounting roles with AP Parts a division of Questor Corp., a Fortune 500 company; 15 years as CFO and administrator of Toledo Clinic, a short term with Mercy Medical System in Toledo and 18 years as executive director of Vision Associates. Since his retirement, he has traveled to Taipei, Taiwan, with his son and the high elevations of Colorado with his wife, Skip. Future plans include continued service as treasurer on the boards of the Anne Grady Center and Science Alliance for Valuing the Environment at Lourdes University.

Chris Warrington (UTCTC ’80, Univ Coll ’82), the general manager for Red Lobster restaurant in Toledo, was awarded with the People Developer Award. This annual award recognizes restaurant leaders who have consistently helped Red Lobster managers and team members grow within the company and serve as a mentor to others. Red Lobster is the world’s largest seafood restaurant, focusing on freshly prepared seafood at reasonable prices.

*Don Sabol (A/S ’80, MPH ’82) received the 2017 Ohio Dental Association Achievement Award in September. He is a health system administrator for the Ohio Department of Medicaid and has been an advocate for patients and dentists in need over the past 15 years. The award is given to someone with a personal and professional commitment to the dental profession and the public’s oral health, and an ambassador for the dental profession.

The Hon. Connie Zemmelman (Law ’81) was presented with the Distinguished Toledo Lawyer Award at the Toledo Bar Association’s Annual Law Day Luncheon in May. She also received the Arabella Babb Mansfield Award in May at the Toledo Women’s Bar Association’s Annual Meeting. The award honors inspirational and highly accomplished lawyers in the Toledo community. Zemmelman is the Lucas County Juvenile Court Judge.
David Jacobs (A/S ’88, A/S ’88) was honored as the 2017 Outstanding Journalist by the Nevada Press Association. He won a total of 10 awards in the Nevada Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, including seven first-place honors. The first-place awards spanned multiple categories: best breaking news reporting, best business spot news story, best explanatory journalism, best entertainment writing, best feature photo, best digital innovation, plus the Freedom of the Press award. Jacobs also won a second-place award in local column writing and two third-place awards for feature writing and photo coverage. He is the top editor for two Nevada newspapers: the Pahrump Valley Times and the Tonopah Times-Bonanza & Goldfield News.
**Dr. John K. Estell (Eng ’84) was featured in the Member Spotlight on the American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE) website in August. Founded in 1893, ASEE has more than 12,000 members, including deans, department heads, faculty members, students, and government and industry representatives. The Member Spotlight highlights individuals who are making an impact in their field and exemplify the mission of furthering education in engineering and engineering technology. Estell is a professor of computer engineering and computer science in the T.J. Smull College of Engineering at Ohio Northern University.

Ken Graves (MA ’99) is the new assistant city manager of Greenville, N.C. Graves will oversee the community development department.
Jennifer (Sidebottom) Fonseca (MEd ’95) was appointed to the board of directors of the Florida Association of Colleges and Employers for a three-year term. The state organization serves career offices at colleges and universities in Florida, as well as the employer partners who recruit at their schools. She also was recognized for Best Workshop at their annual conference and nominated to keynote at the November drive-in conference at Florida State University. Fonesca is the destiny activator and assistant director of career development at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

**Andrea (Houpt) Kimura (Bus ’91) joined Mays Gibson, Inc. in Clemmons, N.C. as a Broker/Realtor.

Jennifer M. Grieco (A/S ’93, Law ’97) was sworn in as president-elect of the State Bar of Michigan, a mandatory bar association with more than 45,000 members. She will take over as president in September 2018. Grieco is a partner at Neuman Anderson Grieco McKenney, P.C. in Birmingham, Mich.

Jamie Reuter (PharmD ’00) was promoted to vice president, enterprise pharmacy solutions for EmblemHealth, located in New York, N.Y. EmblemHealth is one of the largest nonprofit health plans in the United States.

Shelly Musshel Kennedy (Law ’05) was re-elected to a two-year term to the Ohio State Bar Association Council of Delegates. The council is one of the two major governing bodies of the Ohio State Bar Association. Kennedy is a staff attorney to Judge James D. Jensen for Ohio’s Sixth District Court of Appeals.

**Justin Shedron (A/S ’07, A/S ’07) was promoted to the rank of captain in the U.S. Army and has assumed duties as a recruiting and retention officer for the Western Region of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

*Emily (Ciecka) Wilcheck (Bus ’01, MBA ’04, Law ’04) accepted a position with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts on the labor relations team. Her husband, Kevin, and their four boys relocated to Orlando, Fla.

**Daniel DeNardy (Bus ’01) accepted the position of national sales executive at Jenzabar, headquartered in Boston, Mass. Jenzabar offers technology solutions and services tailored to the evolving needs of higher education institutions, today and in the future.

Rahul Parab (MEng ’03) was promoted to associate in the New York City office of Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm. Parab is a water resources and civil engineer currently working on various resilience-related projects, including the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s Red Hook Integrated Flood Protection System and the Virginia Beach sea level rise and flood analysis.

Courtney Ingersoll (A/S ’12, MBA ’14) is a specialist in franchise management at The Wendy’s Company in Columbus, Ohio. Wendy’s is the world’s third largest quick-service hamburger company with more than 6,500 franchise and company restaurants in the United States and U.S. territories, and 28 other countries.

Births and Marriages

Amelia Kern (Ed ’13) and Trey Tompkins were married on Oct. 7 in Herrick Chapel at Adrian College, where they first met. Amelia is a registered nurse with The Toledo Children’s Hospital in the NICU, and Trey is a delivery driver for Gordon Food Service.

Kenn Lapushan (Bus ’11) and Leah Mastrian were united in marriage in October. Kenn is a marketing and business development specialist in Cleveland, and Leah is a physical therapist.

Gretchen Irene Hartley (Eng ’14) and Matthew Allen Murray (HSHS ’11) exchanged vows on Oct. 14 in Detroit. Gretchen is a manufacturing engineer at General Motors in Spring Hill, Tenn. and Matthew is a deputy at the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

Dr. Jason Young (MED ’10) and Emily Devon wed on Sept. 22 in Calcutta, Ohio. Jason is a physician at Riverside Methodist Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, and Emily is a restoration coordinator for the Nature Conservancy.

Stephanie Menicos (HSHS ’03) and Chip Westrick were joined in marriage on June 17 in the Lodge at Maumee Bay State Park, in Oregon, Ohio. Stephanie is a pediatric physical therapist at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation, and Chip is a systems analyst for Trinity Health.

Charles S. Barbour III, Titusville, Fla., 94. He was a former instructor in the College of Business.

Sharon L. (Quiroz) Musch, Toledo, 68. She was a monitor technician at MCO/MUO/UTMC from 1993 until her retirement in 2012.

Dr. Aron Wajskol, Toledo, 92. He joined the MCO faculty in 1974 and retired in 1993. Wajskol wrote a chapter on the first 25 years of the Anesthesiology Department for the 2011 book, “A Community of Scholars – Recollections of the Early Years of the Medical College of Ohio.” The native of Poland survived the Holocaust and appeared in the 2012 documentary, “Bearing Witness: The Voices of Our Survivors.”

Carol A. (Wozniak) Modlin, Toledo, 78. She was a former secretary at the University.

Mary H. (Mowery) Kesling, Toledo, 80. She was a longtime MCO employee and retired as an executive secretary in 1998.

Jean M. (Mulderick) Nicholson, Toledo, 77. She was an employee benefits coordinator in the UT Personnel Office from 1996 until her retirement in 2001.
