| **Dr. Lance A. Talmage (Eng ’60) is a professor and assistant dean of student affairs at The University of Toledo Medical Center. Talmage is also the vice commander of Post 335 of the American Legion.
**Diana H. “Dee” Talmage (MEd ’65) is the newly elected chair of Women and Philanthropy at the University. Women and Philanthropy supports and promotes The University of Toledo while building relationships among a community of generous, forward-thinking women. Talmage also chairs the board of trustees at Owens Community College in Perrysburg, Ohio. |

Hon. Harry Gensler (Law ’80) retired after 25 years as a Nye County, Nev. public defender. Following his retirement, the Las Vegas Municipal Court appointed Gensler to serve as an alternate judge.

**Dr. J. Robert Shindell (Ed ’95, MA ’02) will serve a three-year term on the Distinguished Scientists Advisory Board for the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy asset dedicated to strengthening our nation’s research and development enterprise through education and research participation programs and protecting workers, the public and the environment through research, outreach and verification activities. As a member of the board, his role includes informing the ORISE director’s office on future research direction and topics that are important to its mission.

Joshua J. O’Neil (Eng ’99) was added as a principal to the firm DGL Consulting Engineers, LLC, located in Maumee and Wauseon, Ohio. O’Neil is a senior project manager on the facility and site development team and leads the firm’s parks and recreation sector. DGL specializes in transportation, traffic and safety, facility and site development, professional surveying, construction and technical services and parks and recreation. |

**Anne Creech (att. 1968), Holland, Ohio, 73.
**Dr. Leslie E. Lahti, Sylvania, 87. He joined the faculty as an associate professor of chemical engineering in 1967. Five years later, Lahti was named professor and chair of the department. In 1980, he became dean of the College of Engineering. Under his leadership, the college doubled its faculty and staff, increased its research base from $250,000 a year to $2.5 million annually, and tripled the number of students from 950 in 1979 to nearly 3,000 in 1987. Lahti returned to teaching in 1988 when he stepped down as dean. When he retired in 1990, he was named professor emeritus and continued teaching part-time for another five years. Lahti also assisted with the development of the College of Engineering graduate program, the pre-engineering program, the Office of Applied Research and the Polymer Institute. He was president of the Faculty Senate from 1976 to 1977 and served on several University committees. In 1977, the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers named Lahti the Outstanding Engineering Educator of the Year. In 1986, he was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and his other professional memberships included the American Chemical Society; the American Institute of Chemical Engineers; the American Society of Engineering Education; the Council of Ohio Engineering Deans; and the National Society of Professional Engineers. His research focused on adductive crystallization, a method for separating compounds from a mixture.
Deborah K. “Deb” Madison, Toledo, 48. She was a hospital aide at MCO/MUO/UTMC and worked in sterile processing and transportation.
Sister Ann Rita Young, Sylvania, 79. She was chaplain at the University Medical Center from 2008 until her retirement in 2016.
Richard L. “Dick” Berry, Naples, Fla., 92. He served on the former MCO/MUO Foundation Board of Trustees in the 1980s. Berry also was a member of the University Athletic Board.
**Dr. Richard R. Perry (Ed ’48, MA ’50, Ph.D. ’64), Ottawa Hills, Ohio, 93. He worked on campus for more than 50 years. One of the University’s most enduring figures, Perry achieved many firsts. He was the first special assistant to the president, director of admissions, director of placement and director of alumni relations. In addition, he was the first person in Ohio to organize a college or university office of institutional research. In 1964, he received the University’s first doctor of education degree in higher education, making him the first person to receive three degrees at UToledo. He joined the staff in 1949 as personnel assistant; became director of admissions, placement director and director of alumni relations in 1952; director of admissions and records in 1960; director of institutional research and administrative planning in 1970; assistant vice president for academic affairs in 1971; and associate vice president for academic affairs in 1973. His faculty appointments in the College of Education included instructor in 1949, assistant professor in 1953, associate professor in 1964, and professor in 1968. A prolific author, Perry wrote numerous publications on institutional research as well as the administration of higher education. His service to the campus community included chairing the Commencement Committee for two decades and overseeing the inauguration of two UToledo presidents. Perry was president of the University chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi in 1981. He was a lifetime member of the University Alumni Association, and a member of the University Presidents Club, Rocket Club and Lannon Society. Perry also directed doctoral dissertations and chaired several doctoral committees. He retired from the University in 1990, but continued to teach and advise students for 16 years. The UToledo alumnus helped found the Association for College Admission Counselors, the National Office of the Association for Institutional Research and the Midwest Regional Assembly of the College Entrance Examination Board. Perry served on the board of trustees for Davis College, Defiance College and Western New England College. In 1970, he was one of seven named to the first board of trustees of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. After graduating from Toledo Public Schools in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1946. The World War II veteran received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. In 2015, he received the Soldier’s Medal for his bravery during an ammunition explosion April 6, 1945, in Germany. Perry was with the 63rd Infantry Division when he carried two of his comrades to safety and removed unexploded ammunition before a grenade ignited and injured him. During that ceremony, he also received a Bronze Star for valor for helping fellow soldiers repair communication lines while under fire near Hottviller, France, in 1945. In 2016, Perry received the French Legion of Honor, France’s highest military honor. A longtime UToledo benefactor, Perry established seven endowments at the University and the Foundation to assist students and programs, and he lobbied for the establishment of the Veterans Memorial Plaza on campus.
