’70s

**Dr. Vernon Bolender (MED ’77) is the recipient of the 2017 Dr. Robert McCoy Award by Berger Health Systems in Circleville, Ohio. The award honors physicians who foster long-term relationships with their patients, embrace patient-centered care with family involvement, integrate into the community, exemplify integrity, advocate for patients, lead care teams through the changing health-care environment, have strong communication skills, and are mentors to their peers.

**Jim Stengle (A/S ’77, MA ’78) was named senior vice president, employee benefit business development manager at Hylant. Stengle will provide coaching, training and mentoring to new employee benefits client executives across the entire Hylant footprint. Hylant is a full-service insurance brokerage with 14 offices in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee and Florida.

**Dr. Larry G. McDougle (PhD ’71) was given the 2017 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who, a publisher of a number of directories containing short biographies. The award is given to a set of outstanding biographers who are then featured on recognition websites.

’80s

Dr. Thomas L. Steinmann (MED ’85) was awarded the Teacher of the Year (“Outstanding Clinical Educator,” 2016-17) Award by the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute. Steinmann specializes in cornea and external eye disease at the MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. He is also a professor of ophthalmology at Case Western Reserve University.

David J. Folkwein (MBA ’88) joined GBQ as director of business development in the Cincinnati office. Folkwein will look out for the best interests of clients and prospects by facilitating introductions to various GBQ accounting, tax and business consulting personnel. GBQ is an independent accounting and consulting firm, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

William Chris (Law ’85) is the manager partner of the law firm Roderick Linton Belfance, located in Akron, Ohio. Chris joined the firm as a partner in 2001 and focuses on insurance defense and coverage and fraud investigation, as well as matters involving real estate, collections and business litigation.

David Waxman (Law ’86) joined the Cleveland office of McGlinchey Stafford PLLC as counsel in the area of real estate practice, focusing on real estate transactions.

Dr. Virginia A. Loewenstine (MED ’87) is a new member of the International Association of HealthCare Professionals. Loewenstine has been in practice for more than 25 years, and is currently serving as the president and medical director of Tristate Preventive Health Consultants LLC, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

’90s
**Dr. Lorrie Elchert (A/S ’94, MNRS ’04) graduated from Chamberlain University College of Nursing with her doctorate in nursing practice with high honors. Elchert works as a nurse practitioner for Fallen Timbers Family Physicians in Maumee, Ohio, and is also the supervisor for advanced practice providers for St. Luke’s Hospital.

**Dr. Jean Austin (UTCTC ’92, HSHS ’99, HSHS ’03, MNRS ’05) recently graduated from Chamberlain University College of Nursing with her doctorate of nursing degree. Austin presently works as a nurse practitioner with ProMedica Physicians Adult Medicine. She served on the UT College of Nursing Alumni Affiliate Board and the UT Alumni Association Board. Austin has traveled on medical missions to Africa, Haiti, Honduras and the Philippines. She supervises medical students at The University of Toledo Community Care Clinic.

Janet Ontko (UTCTC ’91, Univ Coll ’09) is now the human resources director and assistant administrator for Sylvania Township.

*Melanie (Simo) Koerperich (A/S ’97, A/S ’97) and Krista (Risher) Yeric (Bus ’98) celebrated the fifth anniversary of Milrich Associates LLP, a virtual assistance and scheduling company. When Koerperich started the company, she quickly brought on her Chi Omega sister, Krista.

Ryan O’Cull (Ed ’96) became the Medina City School District’s new director of technology. O’Cull formerly taught seventh and eighth grade math at Black River Local Schools in Sullivan, Ohio.

Dr. Janet Buckenmeyer (MEd ’98, PhD ’01) was appointed dean of the Bayh College of Education at Indiana State University. The college offers baccalaureate to doctoral degree programs for all levels of education and clinical settings.
’00s

Satish Hemachandran (MEng ’00) accepted the position of general manager of the practice management software business at Carestream Dental in Atlanta. Hemachandran will be responsible for the overall strategy, resource allocation, operational execution and customer experience for dental practice management solutions.

Joel Visser (Univ Coll ’07, MEd ’11) is the new head coach of the Swanton High School basketball team. Visser previously served as head coach at Tipp City Tippecanoe High School. While at Tipp City, he was named the Division II, District 9 Coach of the Year after the 2015-16 season.

**Chief Warrant Officer Justin Shedron (A/S ’07, A/S ’07) was promoted to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 in the United States Army.

Alan Miller (Eng ’02) joined the team at Russell Planning and Engineering, located in Durango, Colo.

Kenneth P. Hicks (Law ’00) was elected to the West Virginia State Legislature for the 2014-16 and 2016-18 terms. Hicks has served the 19th district since 2014 as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates. He serves on the education, industry and labor committee and is vice chair of the natural resources committee. He practices law in Huntington, W.Va.

*Dr. Kristi N. Hottenstein (PhD ’16) was appointed vice chancellor for enrollment management at the University of Michigan-Flint campus.

Dr. Kimberly Berman (PhD ’13) was hired as superintendent of the Lemon Grove School District, located in Lemon Grove, Calif. The district serves about 3,800 students in kindergarten through eighth grade at six schools and operates a preschool.

Births and Marriages
Matthew Robert Caris (Ed ’15) and Leesa Deanne Corken were married in July in Perrysburg, Ohio. Matt is a science teacher at Patrick Henry High School in Hamler, Ohio, and Leesa is a math teacher at Bowling Green High School.

Mandi Day (NRS ’09) and Mark Sutton exchanged vows on June 30 in Raleigh, N.C. The couple resides in Gulfport, Miss., where Mark serves in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Amanda Tyhulski (Pharm ’12) and Kory Starks are engaged to be married on Oct. 21 at St. Clarence Church in North Olmsted, Ohio. Amanda is employed at Metro-Health in Cleveland, and Kory is a Class A Golf Professional and is employed at MTD Products in Valley City.

**Chief Warrant Officer Justin Shedron (A/S ’07, A/S ’07) and Dr. Jennifer Rega Shedron are the proud parents of a baby boy, Dominic James Shedron, born June 5.

*John A. Adams (Law ’90) and Laura Mlcac are engaged to be married. James is the quality manager of the vacuum insulating glass business unit of Guardian Glass in Millbury, Ohio.

Bernard W. “Bernie” Beers, Perrysburg, Ohio and Naples, Fla., 91. He was a former instructor at The University of Toledo.

Margot H. (Heilbrunn) Brauer, Toledo, 91. She was a former occupational therapist at the  Medical College of Ohio.

Dolores M. (Riley) Long, Elkhart, Ind., 90. She was a nurse at the Medical College of Ohio from 1979 to 1991.

James R. Metzler, Sylvania, Ohio, 69. He taught music as an instructor at UT.

John J. Michalak Jr., 81. He volunteered with the Satellites Auxiliary.

Daniel J. “Danny” Neshkoff, Lambertville, Mich., 90. He worked in the UT Maintenance Department until he retired in 1989.

Joseph R. Scalzo Jr. (Bus ’68, Law ’77), Toledo, 70. He taught in the Criminal Justice Department from 2001 to 2009.

**Sanford “Sam” Taylor Jr. (Eng ’58), Toledo, 82. He helped oversee the growth of MCO for nearly 25 years. From 1971 to 1995, he held several positions: superintendent of construction, director of college facilities, and associate vice president of engineering and construction.

Candace L. “Candy” (Maupin) Bollin, Swanton, 73. She worked in the MCO Radiology Department for more than two decades. She joined the staff in 1984 and retired as lead medical transcriptionist in 2010.

Willis F. “Bill” Day III, Toledo, 94. He was a former UT faculty member.

Max Gerber, Sylvania, 88. He was a sports information director from 1960 until his retirement in 1988. For most of those years, he managed the Rockets’ media relations efforts as a one-man shop. Gerber was tireless in his efforts to promote the Toledo football teams that went undefeated in three consecutive seasons from 1969 to 1971. He also served during the glory years of the men’s basketball program, which enjoyed a 23-2 season in 1966-67 and a Sweet 16 run in 1979 among its three trips to the NCAA Tournament. He redefined the position of sports information director at UT, setting standards and developing policies that are followed today. Gerber received many national awards for excellence in public relations. During his tenure, Rocket teams won 24 Mid-American Conference titles. In 1993, the University dedicated the media area of the Glass Bowl tower as “The Max.”

William C. “Bill” Hartough, Toledo, 88. He was a photographer at the University for four decades. Hartough joined the UT staff in 1965 and was promoted to photographer 2 in 1976. He retired from the University in 2005.

Ruth C. (Beckett) (Fought) Howard, Toledo, 90. She worked in microbiology research at MCO.

Rick “Glenn” Amstutz, Toledo, 61. He was a custodial worker at UT from 1997 until his retirement in 2007.

**Dr. William H. Clegg (MBA ’73, PhD ’78), Toledo, 91. He began teaching at UT as a part- time instructor in 1979. He retired from Owens-Illinois Inc. after 32 years, and then became an associate professor of computer systems and production management in the College of Business in 1982. Clegg retired in 2000 and received the emeritus designation.

Dr. Peter M. Lau, Redmond, Wash., 84. He joined the MCO faculty as a professor in 1975. In 1994, he became a volunteer faculty member and was granted emeritus status when he retired in 2001. He also served as director of transfusion services.

Marilyn M. (Buschmann) Lindemulder (Ed ’58), Fairfield, Calif., 81. She was a former UT faculty member from 1997 to 2002.

Patricia F. (Martin) Mercurio, Toledo, 67. She worked for several years in UT’s Information Technology Department.

Robert C. “Pete” Petersen, Toledo, 70. He was a staff nurse in the emergency room from 1991 to 2003.
